Summer flowering bulbs
Wed 18 Dec 2024
January is a great time to plant summer-flowering bulbs for several reasons:
Preparation for Blooming Season: Planting bulbs early gives them sufficient time to establish roots before the growing season, ensuring they have the energy to produce vibrant blooms in summer.
Cooler Soil Temperatures: The cool soil in January is ideal for many summer-flowering bulbs, as it prevents premature growth while allowing the bulbs to settle.
Ahead of Spring Growth: By planting in January, you avoid the rush of spring planting and ensure the bulbs are in place before the garden gets crowded with other plants.
Longer Growth Period: Early planting gives the bulbs a head start, which can lead to stronger plants and more abundant flowers.
Dormancy Period: Many summer bulbs, such as dahlias, gladiolus, and lilies, need a period of dormancy to prepare for growth. Planting in January aligns with their natural lifecycle.
Availability of Bulbs: In January we have many bulbs and lots of variety here at Twenty Pence Garden Centre.
By planting in January, gardeners can enjoy healthier plants and a more spectacular display during the summer months.
