How to take care of your garden in Autumn

Tubs & Baskets

Continue to deadhead, water, and fertilise your summer plantings in tubs, baskets, and borders to maximise their display duration. As summer bedding plants begin to fade or finish blooming, replace them with fresh new-season plants to maintain color through autumn and winter. Traditional favorites like pansies, violas, and wallflowers can be combined with hardy tub and basket plants, creating vibrant displays that brighten even the gloomiest autumn and winter days. Additionally, now is the time to start planting spring bulbs to ensure a burst of colour in spring next year.

Don’t forget to refresh the compost in your pots to give your new plants a strong start. Opt for a peat-free multipurpose mix thats for good drainage during the wetter months. Any old compost can be repurposed as mulch for borders, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

As gaps emerge in your flower beds and borders, it's the perfect time to plant bulbs like crocuses, daffodils plus snowdrops, which will kick off your spring display as early as February.

Daffodils can be planted starting in September, while tulips are best planted in November.

For indoor displays, prepared hyacinths can also be planted in pots, bowls, and baskets in September. These bulbs are specially treated to bloom in time for Christmas.

Lawn Care

September is the perfect time to give your lawn the care it needs to recover from summer and enter winter strong and healthy, ensuring it looks its best next spring.

Start by scarifying with a lawn rake or an electric scarifier to remove moss and dead grass. Aerating the lawn is also beneficial to alleviate compaction from summer use. The simplest method is to use a garden fork; push it 15 cm into the ground and wiggle it to create holes, repeating every 30 cm.

Spread a thin layer of lawn dressing evenly across the lawn and brush it into the holes. You can also add topsoil and lawn dressing to fill in any dips or holes before reseeding.

Apply autumn lawn feed to prepare your lawn for the upcoming winter. Any bare patches can be addressed with lawn seed, rolls of turf, or a repair kit.

September is also an excellent time to establish a new lawn, as the autumn rains will help it settle in before winter arrives.
